1. What is United Way and who do they help?
United Way is a charitable organization that works
closely with our community to understand human-care
needs throughout the Central & South Okanagan. We
combine the gifts of thousands of donors to fund
programs to address these local community needs.

2. Why should I give to United Way?
Support a broad range of services Recognize that issues are interconnected and
respond accordingly Provide a spectrum of support for people in our
community - from prevention services to crisis
management. United Way takes a planned approach to meeting
community needs, using community consultation, in
addition to extensive staff and volunteer expertise,
to direct your gift to high impact programs. This
approach ensures that all community needs, not just
the most popular ones, are supported. Someone
you work with, someone in your family or you,
yourself, may need the services provided by a
United Way funded program in the future - 1 in 3
individuals are helped by United Way programs
and services. By supporting United Way you are
making a difference for people living in our
community.
3. How is giving to United Way different than
giving to a single-purpose charity?
United Way donors support a broad range of
community programs and services including: children
and families, assisting people living in poverty,
helping seniors stay connected and supporting people
with health conditions and disabilities. We know that when people need help, its often
more complicated than simply going to one agency, or
accessing one program, United Way donors help to
ensure that comprehensive network of programs and
services are available for people when they need
them. While United Way is funding programs and services
that responds to crisis situation, we are also
looking ahead, working in a preventative manner to
help lay the groundwork for a healthy and vibrant
community with healthy citizens.
4. How do I know I can trust United Way?
United Way in the Central Okanagan has been a
trusted part of our community for 56 years with a
proven track-record of improving the quality of
peoples lives right here in our community. United Way works in close consultation with
community volunteer and staff experts to understand
where the needs are greatest in each of the
communities we serve. United Way is governed by a Board of Directors and
undergoes an annual financial audit.
5. How do I know that my donation is well spent
and the agencies I am supporting are credible and
accountable?
United Way monitors the agencies funds to
ensure your dollars are being well managed and used
effectively. United Ways application process has
high standards that each must meet prior to being
funded. United Way works closely with agencies to
understand how your donation is invested and the
impact your gift makes in our community. United Way
is then committed to communicating that information
back to our donors. Regular meetings between United Way and agency
Executive Directors help to ensure strong
communication links and exchange of information. United Way provides training and support to
agencies to ensure programs are effective, efficient
and accessible.
